Urban Family Migration and Economic Livelihoods of Migrants in Colombo District, Sri Lanka

Globally, there are numerous types of migrations in the internal migration process. Most studies have focused on individual than family or household level and their social economic livelihoods. Therefore, this study explores reasons for urban status The uses quantitative method to gather information utilizes data from Population Housing Census, 2012 Sri Lanka primary collected 2015-2016 Municipal Council Urban areas Colombo district Lanka. unit analysis is migrant household. Chi-square test Contingency Coefficient were applied examine factors which influence livelihoods destination areas. A composite index was constructed using PCA analyse data. findings reveal that approximately two-thirds (60.79%) families migrated due children’s educational attainments. majority easy access non-agricultural employment opportunities, good education facilities, public services opportunities utilize other infrastructure facilities available locations may assist policymakers planners implement new policies making necessary changes existing so as reduce highly urbanized capital city country.
